If only all clients could also be your best friends who you have practically the same taste as… if only.

ski lift ticket save the dates

Rebecca shared her photo-wisdom (just a little part of it) last week in this great post about picking a wedding photographer- so I thought it would be fun today to share a little bit about our process at evapaul to create a custom wedding invite (or in this case, a save the date) We were lucky to have an awesome client who: 1. had a great idea (she came to us wanting a lift ticket like STD, complete with a wicket- the little piece of metal that hooks onto the zipper of your coat) 2. let us really get creative with it.

When designing a custom piece, we take about a week and then email the client 3 completely different options. Above are the 3 options we sent her.

nic (my husband and business partner!) designed the last option which is front and back. She loved the idea of a heavily patterned back but ultimately picked option #1. Then we tweaked it- added navy, took the idea from the back of design #3 and added the wicket and here is the finished save the date:

I was so happy with the way it turned out, it may be my favorite thing i’ve ever designed. Best of all, Natalie loves it to0- and when a bride is happy, I am happy. One thing we had to adjust on was how we would send them- we were worried about sending them in a regular envelope because of the wicket. So instead, we sent them in a square white photo mailer and used custom labels instead of printing her return address on the labels, which she originally wanted. So, be flexible!  Lesson learned- you may not be able to find exactly the wedding stationary you’d like “off the shelf” so- find a designer you love and then ask them to design a custom piece for you. I am sure you won’t regret it:)

Red Inspiration

There is nothing I love more than a good pop of red. You don’t need much to make a big statement.

SAY NO TO THE RENTED TUX :: GET YOUR OWN

When you have a chance to wear a tuxedo, you should look your best. A cheap, recycled, ‘one size fits most’ tuxedo with limited alterations will come up short. Invest in a quality tuxedo and get it fitted right, it will pay dividends in the photos of your most memorable moments. - The Style Blogger

There is just something right about a man who owns his own tuxedo. If you want to be that man, read on.

It costs about $150 to rent a tuxedo from Men’s Wearhouse. The quality is awful, you’ll wear it once, and you probably won’t look your best doing it. In my opinion, the savings just isn’t worth it! Building your own black tie attire can cost you anywhere from $500 (search for sales and this will drop!) to $5,000, depending on the quality and designer. There aren’t too many men out there who want to spend thousands of dollars on clothing, and those who would don’t need any advice on how to look good in a tuxedo or where to buy one! I’m looking at you, James Bond.

A few of the many great places to find well priced tuxedos are Indochino, J Crew (pictured below), Brooks Brothers, Ralph Lauren (pictured above), and Formally Modern Tuxedo. I will say that black tie attire is called “evening wear” for a reason. It’s not meant for daytime. This has been forgotten with weddings but I strongly encourage you to not wear a tux to your wedding unless it’s an evening wedding.

Want to break tradition a little and have some tuxedo fun? Do it! Getting a unique jacket like velvet, white dinner (my personal favorite), or vintage are all great ideas.

The powder blue jacket was found on etsy.

Black and white tuxedo jacket found on C. Madeleine’s Vintage Boutique.

If you’re not into spicing up the jacket, your best bet is to get some accessories (bow ties, cufflinks, cummerbunds, etc.) Stay tuned for great places to find fun man-cessories.

Last, check out the great resources below for more information on being a black tie winner.
